Hadrian’s Haul Ltd is owned and run by Mark Robinson a former Royal Air Force Search and Rescue helicopter pilot.

Originally from Yorkshire, Mark studied psychology at Bradford University before joining the Royal Air Force.  After officer and flying training, he gained his wings and was selected to fly the Sea King in the Search and Rescue role. The same helicopter that Prince William was to fly many years later!!

Mark’s first posting was to RAF Lossiemouth in northern Scotland before being posted to RAF Boulmer on the Northumbrian coast in the mid 1980’s.

Mark flew on a variety of missions during his time in the RAF with notable ones being; the Lockerbie and Piper Alpha disasters, flying Her Majesty the Queen Mother from the Castle of May to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and even a poorly porpoise from Northumberland to the Sea Life Centre in Scarborough.

The area of operation from Boulmer included the North Sea and the whole of Northern England, including the Lake District. Returning from rescues in the Lakes, many a happy hour was spent taking the ‘scenic route’ along Hadrian’s Wall whilst waving to walkers along the way.

Carrylite

Not wishing to leave such a wonderful part of the country, Mark eventually chose Northumberland over the RAF and on leaving the forces set up Carrylite in 1997, the first luggage transfer service in Northumberland and the Scottish Borders.  Starting on St Cuthbert’s Way, Carrylite then expanded to cover St Oswald’s Way, the Northumberland Coast Path, the Inn Way to Northumberland and the Coast and Castles and Sandstone Way cycle routes.

Over 25 years Carrylite has developed an outstanding reputation for efficiency and reliability and now provides luggage transfer services to all the holiday companies that offer these walks as part of a package, as well as for direct bookings from members of the public.

Hadrian’s Wall

At the request of several of the walking holiday operators who needed the same standard of service on the Wall that Carrylite provided, Mark set up Hadrian’s Wall Baggage Transfer Ltd to concentrate purely on the Hadrian’s Wall Long Distance Path.

At the end of the 2022 season Mark bought out Hadrian’s Haul, the only other long standing baggage mover on the Wall.  Naming the new business Hadrian’s Haul Ltd, it is now the largest baggage business on Hadrian’s Wall.

Mark lives just off Hadrian’s Wall in the lovely village of Corbridge in the Tyne Valley, with his wife Jayne, their daughter Jessica, a mad Bouvier des Flandres called Baxter, 2 cats, (Ciri & Winston), and 2 Giant African Land Snails called Gary & Gaston.

Hadrian’s Haul moved my backpack between the 28th March and 2nd April whilst I concentrated on tackling Hadrian’s Wall. There is absolutely no way I could have made it carrying my backpack, especially up and down the crags in the middle (most scenic) section. Completely reliable, bags were waiting for me every day when I arrived exhausted. It also acted as that motivation to keep going too rather than calling it a day when I’d had enough. There is no way I could have completed in 7 days otherwise. Very competitive pricing too,  I cannot understand why anyone would want the hassle of carrying their own bag. Very amenable to late changes to plans as things undoubtedly do change as you progress on your walk. Simple booking, I booked the day before.
